Default Bank of America

I checked with Bank of America today. If you have a checking account with BOA you can use your debit card at Scotiabank in the Dominican Republic. You will not be charged ATM fees but you will be charged the 3% Foriegn currency exchange fee through Mastercard or VISA.

Others have told me that you can establish a good relationship with a Cambio and they will cash your checks drawn on USA banks without holding the funds for years before giving it to you. Don't know that for certain, just what I've been told.

True. I have been changing company and personal checks for years with Cambios.

I started out with small amounts to build their trust, and went from there.

When you find one that will change your checks, be very careful recommending other folks. If someone you know burns a cambio, they'll come back to you, and it could affect your future dealings with them.

You need to estabish a relationship with a bank. I can cash checks with Banco Santo Cruz for pesos at a better rate than they give for cash. I got 36.11 today which is as good as anyone else has received today I am sure.

Scotia will also rape you on the exchange and probably give you 3-5% less in the rate of exchange along with the other charge.
